Expressive & Performing Arts
Expressive and Performing Arts at Parrs Wood goes from strength to strength. Our aim is to bring together staff and students from all areas of school life in new and enriching ways to improve engagement and raise achievement.
As well as cross-curricular arts projects we also involve our local community. A recent drama based Arts project offered students the opportunity to explore drama and arts based learning beyond the curriculum and to this end we set up a media / research team to visit our local community - recording images, stories from residents, interviewing key figures in the community etc. The research entailed visiting the local library, collecting archive material, organising and recording a storytelling tea party for grandparents and other elderly residents who wished to share in the communal project.
The material formed the basis of a cross curricular based module of work (embracing Drama / Art / English / History / Geography / PSHE) culminating in a 2 day event working with a theatre company to produce a performance based response - which was performed in school and as a 'site specific' work in Didsbury village. The project offered a diversified learning approach as the delivery of core curriculum subjects within a cohesive theme, enabled the students to explore their own personalised learning styles and achieve accordingly.
Visiting professionals from all areas of the Arts are regularly invited into school, not just to perform but to work with the students. To place the work we do in the department in context in the real world we also organise trips to theatres, art galleries and arts events around the country.
Our staff highly recommend these links for students to visit as they contain useful resources to assist in this particular subject area
