PREPARING FOR UNIVERSITY!

image

We’ve been doing a lot of work this term preparing our University applications. In tutor time we’ve had discussions about how to write a good application, and in assemblies we’ve had talks from University admissions tutors and our careers adviser. This week there were several visits to different Universities to find out about courses and University life. We went to Lancaster. It is a Campus University which we were shown as well as some lectures. We also talked to the Assistant Dean at lunch and she was giving us advice about making a good application.
Here are her top tips –

  • Work hard to get the best grades you can (applications for things like maths and sciences are going up, business and finance are less popular this year)

  • Find out a lot about the course you want to study to make sure you will want to work hard at it.

  • Besides good grades develop other skills like team work and communication skills by doing extracurricular activities and hobbies, especially if they are to do with your course.

  • Get your application in early!

I’m interested in Engineering, and we were shown how computers are used to design complicated systems by breaking them down into lots of small simple parts. It’s called Element Analysis. We designed part of a racing car. The students actually build these projects and test drive them.

Lancaster has a very good reputation for Nuclear Engineering. With our nuclear power stations nearly 60 years old, there is enough decommissioning work for engineers for the rest of this century, and that’s besides the extra work of building new ones. There were other lectures on things like Maths, Sciences, Psychology, Geography and ICT. It was a really useful visit.
