The School Network and ICT Resources

The use and application of ICT for staff, students and the community throughout Parrs Wood has been evolving at a phenomenal rate.

Parrs Wood can offer access to its network through both wireless technologies and a hard wired infrastructure.

Our aim is to continually provide both staff and students with the best ICT service and support in order to help raise achievement. Evidence suggests that ICT is a contributor of learning and teaching and is a tool for whole school improvement. Since March 2000 the school has been incorporating ICT into many of its frameworks to ensure that ICT and associated new technologies play a vital part in the development of these frameworks.

At Parrs Wood all teaching staff are issued with a laptop and the development of all staffs ICT skills are supported by an in-house training programme in the effective use of ICT.

Staff are encouraged to use ICT within the classroom as an everyday piece of equipment and not to think of it as an additional teaching aid that is separate from their own subject specialism.

Through ICT our students can access learning 24 hours a day, seven days a week, at any time and from anywhere!

  • Complete access to the network across the entire campus via wireless technology.
  • All rooms throughout the school have a minimum of four network points.
  • Every teaching room has at least one computer.
  • Seven dedicated ICT teaching rooms (two in the 6 th Form).
  • Six class sets of laptops in rechargeable trolleys with wireless access.
  • Data projectors distributed across faculty areas (many ceiling mounted).
  • Interactive whiteboards in every classroom.

Our Virtual Learning Environment ensures that pupils can access resources outside lesson time using the internet. In addition we offer a ‘home-school’ package for some pupils who have difficulty in coming to school due to illness etc.

A plethora of peripheral devices eg, scanners, digital cameras (still and video), data logging equipment etc.

To ensure that our network operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year we have full time dedicated ICT support staff.

Their roles are vital within the school. They have specialisms in:

  • Network Management
  • Database Management
  • Systems Analysis

With their support we can ensure that the staff and students are provided with the best and most appropriate ICT facilities that are available to our school.

Staff utilise the skills and knowledge provided by our support staff to develop new ideas that are related to ICT within their subject area to develop new resources.
